Description

Dr. Glendon Chase McCormick was born in paradise, Nova Scotia and grew up in Granville Centre, Annapolis County. He attended the one-room in Granville Centre, where his father was a teacher. He went on to highschool in Annapolis Royal, then to the University of Kings College and Â鶹´«Ã½×ÊÔ´ University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in Science in 1935. His scientific career led him to studey at McGill University, where he achieved a PhD in physics. He taught for a few years in the physics department at McGill before going on to work for the National Research Council in Ottawa, where he specialized in electro-magnetic antennae and was a pioneer in the field of weather detection using radar. After his retirement, he continuted to write and present scientific papers at the national and international level. He married Ethel Neish whom he had met when a young patient at the Sanitarium in Kentville. After his retirement they moved back to Nova Scotia and settled in the small community of Karsdale, Annapolis Co. Both Glen and Ethel were active in their community. He was the treasurer and a strong supporter of the Port Wade New Horizons Club, and he volunteered to help other seniors with their income taxes. He was a strong supporter of Christ Church, Karsdale and church treasurer for Christ Church for many years. His garden brought him much joy in his early retirement and he was well-known for his winning roses. Ethel predeceased him in 2003. Glendon was the last member of his immediate family. He died on December 28, 2009. 

The Glendon Chase McCormick Scholarship will be used to provide annual scholarships to Masters and/or PhD students studying at Â鶹´«Ã½×ÊÔ´ University. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You must be enrolled in a graduate Masters or Doctoral program in any discipline. 
  • First-class academic standing in the most recent two year prior to the year of application is required (GPA 3.7/4.3)
